Map: April Record Wet for Some Parts of Ontario

With the flip of the calendar to May, Ontario producers will no doubt be hoping for some drier weather.

As the map below shows, much of the province saw above-normal amounts of precipitation this past month. Things were particularly wet from Toronto all the way north to the New Liskeard region and beyond, with amounts more than 200% of normal. Various areas also saw 150-200% of normal amounts, including the Niagara Peninsula and a swath of the northern shore of Lake Erie extending from about Leamington to West Lorne.

According to the Weather Network, Toronto’s Pearson International Airport experienced its rainiest April on record, recording a whopping 135 mm of the wet stuff during the month, more than two times the April average of 63 mm.

Timmins and Sudbury also recorded their rainiest Aprils on record, with Wiarton on the Bruce Peninsula falling just short of setting a new high.

However, the longer-term forecast suggests better times ahead.

Although rain will linger in some areas through the first week of May, the Weather Network said the month will feature a more northwesterly flow, with less ability to tap into Gulf moisture that helped bring all the rain in April.

Some short bouts of cooler weather are also possible in May, but no extreme heat is on the radar – yet.
